Innovation, ICT Key to Digital Competitiveness: Ramamoorthy

Former Chairman of Cognizant India Ramkumar Ramamoorthy said that innovation, entrepreneurial drive, and strong information and communication technology production would be critical in shaping a country’s competitiveness in the digital era.

Speaking at the Change Makers Programme at GITAM Deemed to be University on Tuesday, he engaged with students and faculty about the challenges and opportunities arising from rapid technological change. He noted that ICT and ICT-enabled sectors are key contributors to economic growth and employment, and observed that technological advancements are unfolding at a pace much faster than in the past.

Mr. Ramamoorthy said India has positioned itself as a leading destination for Global Capability Centres, gaining an edge over several countries due to its robust digital infrastructure, innovation-focused ecosystem, and skilled workforce. He added that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated digital adoption, especially in the healthcare and medical technology sectors.

Referring to the younger generation, he said India’s ongoing digital transformation has created fresh opportunities for skill development, entrepreneurship, and employment. The combination of affordable internet services, widespread smartphone penetration, and government-led digital initiatives has enabled greater participation of youth in the digital economy.
