Keep Politics Out of Universities: Governor Nazeer

Andhra University stands as a beacon of higher learning and a treasure trove of knowledge, and has rightfully earned its place among India’s oldest and most distinguished institutions, said S. Abdul Nazeer, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, while presiding over the 91st and 92nd convocation ceremonies of Andhra University on Wednesday.

Addressing students during the university’s centenary year, the Governor described the convocation as a milestone moment for graduates receiving their degrees.

He credited the institution’s strong foundation to visionary leaders such as C. R. Reddy, who laid the groundwork; Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who advanced its academic legacy; and V. S. Krishna, who further strengthened its prominence. Their combined efforts, he noted, helped shape Andhra University into a centre of academic excellence.

The Governor also highlighted the contributions of eminent scholars, including T. R. Seshadri, S. Bhagavantam, Hiren Mukerjee, K. Satchidananda Murthy, Humayun Kabir, and V. K. R. V. Rao, for setting high benchmarks in teaching and research.

Referring to notable alumni, he said Nobel laureate C. V. Raman and statistician C. R. Rao continue to inspire generations of students.

Emphasising the need to safeguard academic integrity, the Governor called for keeping politics away from university campuses.

During the ceremony, honorary doctorates were conferred on Purnachandra Rao Saggurthi, Global Finance Leader and Vice Chairman at Bank of America, and Thallavajjula Patanjali Sastry, an eminent Telugu author, environmentalist, and archaeologist.

Vice Chancellor G. P. Rajasekher presented the university’s annual report and later felicitated the Governor with a memento.
