Left parties seek CM’s intervention on Andhra University tensions
Left parties on Wednesday urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to intervene in the situation at Andhra University, alleging that the activities of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were affecting campus harmony and creating religious divisions among students.
At a round table meeting held at Yechuri Bhavan in Pithapuram Colony, leaders of the CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) (New Democracy), CI(ML) (Praja Poru), and SUCI condemned alleged attacks on students and incidents impacting peace on the campus. They announced plans to stage a protest at the district Collectorate on February 27.
The leaders demanded the arrest of RSS and BJP-affiliated activists allegedly linked to the disturbances. They urged the State government to safeguard peace, uphold secular values, and maintain communal harmony at the university.
They also sought the registration of cases against individuals accused of circulating objectionable content targeting women students on social media and appealed to the university administration to prevent the entry of those inciting caste, religious, or regional hatred.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the police response, the leaders alleged violations of campus norms, including the damaging of flags belonging to student, labour, and Dalit organisations. They called for strict action.
Resolutions adopted at the meeting included preventing RSS religious activities on the campus in the future, immediate arrests of those responsible for attacks on students, intervention by the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to restore normalcy, firm measures to ensure peace, and the implementation of the 2026 UGC regulations along with the constitution of equality committees.
Several district-level leaders of the participating parties attended the meeting.
