Local Language Skills Key to Better Banking, Say Vizag Customers and Staff

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s suggestion that public sector banks post staff who can speak the local language has received strong support in Visakhapatnam. Her remarks followed recent complaints in Karnataka, where customers said they struggled to communicate with bank staff who did not know Kannada.

In Vizag, many say the issue is common. “When a customer cannot explain their problem in Telugu, it becomes stressful for both sides,” said a branch manager in Maddilapalem. “Senior citizens depend on clear, spoken communication. Language gaps often lead to confusion and delays.”

Customers recall a time when banks were more connected to local communities. “Earlier, staff knew our families and backgrounds. It created trust,” said S. Leela, a retired teacher from Seethammadhara. Now, many employees come from other regions. If they don’t speak Telugu, even small clarifications become difficult.”

Younger customers who mostly use digital services still feel language matters when issues arise. “When I need help, speaking in my own language makes the process quicker and easier,” said Kiran, a software employee from MVP Colony.

The Finance Minister also stressed the need to simplify KYC procedures, saying customers should not be burdened with excessive paperwork.

SBI officials in the city said the bank is already working to improve processes. “We are implementing Project Saral to streamline procedures,” an SBI officer said. “There is also growing awareness about improving language compatibility.”

Employee unions suggest planning and training as the long-term solution. “Transfers are routine in banking. Basic local language training should be part of postings,” a union representative said.

Many residents believe the move will help restore warmth and trust in banking services. “Banks deal with people every day. Speaking the local language is not just convenient. It shows respect,” said a customer at a Dwarakanagar branch.
