Loose Milk Under Scanner in City

Food Safety department officials stepped up inspections of loose milk vendors across the district on Wednesday after the recent suspected milk adulteration incident triggered consumer concern.

Inspection teams visited retail outlets in Akkayyapalem, Seethammadara, Shivajipalem, and Rama Talkies areas. They collected samples of cow and buffalo milk sold in loose form.

Officials conducted on-the-spot checks using a lactometer to detect possible water adulteration. They also used pH indicator papers to measure acidity levels and identify irregularities.

District Food Safety Officer G.V. Appa Rao said the department has sent the samples to the State Food Laboratory for detailed analysis under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Act and Regulations. The tests will examine milk fat content, Solids-Not-Fat (SNF%), and other quality parameters.

He warned that strict action would follow any violations. “Authorities may impose penalties of up to ₹5 lakh under Section 51 of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act if samples are found sub-standard,” Appa Rao said.

He added that misbranding or labelling violations could attract fines of up to ₹3 lakh under Section 52. If officials find harmful adulterants or unsafe substances, they will initiate action under Section 59. This may lead to penalties of up to ₹10 lakh and/or imprisonment, depending on the severity.

Appa Rao said the department will register cases after receiving the laboratory reports. Further legal action will follow.

Officials also urged consumers to report any suspicion regarding milk quality or food safety violations.
