Medicover completes 100 robotic cancer surgeries in Vizag
Medicover Hospitals in Visakhapatnam has marked a major milestone in its cancer care programme by completing 100 complex robotic cancer surgeries. Hospital officials say the achievement highlights the city’s growing capacity to offer advanced, precision-driven treatment that was earlier available only in major metropolitan centres.
In a statement on Sunday, Dr V. Karthik Chandra, chief consultant surgical oncologist and robotic surgeon, said the hospital performed 396 robotic procedures in the past year. Of these, 100 were robotic onco-surgeries carried out using the fourth-generation ‘da Vinci X’ platform. He said the system’s high-definition 3D vision and enhanced flexibility allow surgeons to operate in narrow and sensitive areas with greater confidence.
Dr Karthik Chandra said the technology has proved valuable for patients who face higher surgical risks, including elderly individuals, people with obesity and those with deep or complex pelvic tumours. “Our focus is to deliver world-class, minimally invasive cancer surgery with strong safety and precision standards,” he said. He added that his training at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai helped introduce advanced robotic techniques in Visakhapatnam.
Medicover Hospitals has been using robotic technology for a wide range of cancer-related procedures, including uterine (endometrial) cancer surgeries, gastrointestinal cancer surgeries and thyroid surgeries. The hospital said the robotic approach offers several benefits over open surgery. These include less pain, reduced blood loss, fewer complications, faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay.
Doctors said quicker recovery helps patients return to their daily routine sooner, which is especially important for those undergoing cancer treatment. Urologist Dr Chodisetti Subbarao and senior consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Kiranmayi Gottapu also spoke about the growing role of robotic surgery in improving patient outcomes.
