MEPMA Launches ‘Sakhi Suraksha’ to Strengthen Health of SHG Women

The Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) introduces the “Sakhi Suraksha” program to improve women’s health in urban Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative supports the Chief Minister’s vision for a “Healthy Andhra Pradesh.”

The program will kick off on Thursday, October 9, at 10:30 a.m. It will take place at the Sagarika Meeting Hall, Andhra University Convention Centre, Beach Road. Local representatives and MEPMA Mission Director Sri N. Tej Bharat will lead the inauguration.

Under the Sakhi Suraksha program, women in SHGs can access 16 types of medical tests for free. The aim is to catch lifestyle-related and mental health issues early. This will help women stay healthy and active in their income-generating activities.

MEPMA is partnering with the National Urban Health Mission to implement this initiative in 74 municipalities. They plan to conduct health check-ups for 100,000 women over the next year. Those who have health concerns will be referred to government or private hospitals for additional care.

The tests will screen for hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, cholesterol issues, heart problems, anemia, vitamin and protein deficiencies, and cancers of the breast, uterus, and mouth. Participants will also receive mental health counseling. Additionally, each woman will get insurance coverage up to Rs 5 lakh through the Ayushman Bharat scheme. They will also have access to four annual teleconsultations and hospital referrals in emergencies.

This initiative represents a vital step toward enhancing women’s health and boosting their participation in community and economic activities.
