MP Sribharat backs law clean-up for modern governance
With an emphasis on cleaning up India’s statute books to suit present-day governance, Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat on Tuesday spoke in strong support of the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha, calling it a crucial step towards effective and transparent administration.
Participating in the debate, Mr Sribharat said governments had often been proactive in enacting new laws and enforcing compliance but had failed to repeal obsolete provisions. This, he noted, led to regulatory clutter, confusion and discretionary implementation.
He said the Constitution was conceived as a living document, empowering successive generations to amend, refine or repeal laws in line with changing needs.
Highlighting the NDA government’s record over the past decade, the MP said more than 40,000 unnecessary compliances had been eliminated and over 1,500 outdated laws repealed, significantly improving ease of living and ease of doing business. In contrast, he pointed out that only one repeal Bill was introduced between 2004 and 2014.
Referring to Andhra Pradesh, Mr Sribharat said poorly drafted legislation in the past, including the Land Titling Act and the Three Capitals legislation, created uncertainty and eroded public trust, eventually forcing their withdrawal. Laws, he stressed, must provide stability and confidence, not confusion.
With the NDA now in power in the state, he said the government was focused on reviewing problematic laws, amending conflicting provisions, repealing harmful clauses and restoring transparency and predictability in governance.
He added that renewed investor confidence was already visible, with Andhra Pradesh securing investment commitments of over Rs 13 lakh crore at the CII Summit 2025 in Visakhapatnam, expected to generate 16.3 lakh jobs. He also cited major global investments, including Google’s $15 billion AI hub and Reliance Industries’ proposed 1 GW AI data centre in the city.
