New DIGIPIN System to Replace Traditional PIN Codes in India

India’s postal system is getting a major upgrade. The Department of Posts has unveiled DIGIPIN, a 10-digit alphanumeric address system. This new system promises to improve delivery accuracy and address gaps in the current system.

The six-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) code has served India for over 50 years. Introduced in 1972, it helped sort and deliver mail. But now, the country needs something more precise.

“The old PIN code was designed for basic sorting,” said a senior official from the Department of Posts. “Today, we need better tools for exact location identification.”

DIGIPIN will bring that precision. It’s a collaboration between IIT Hyderabad and NRSC ISRO. The system will improve everything, from emergency services to online shopping deliveries, especially in rural and urban areas with complex addresses.

“This system will change how we deliver goods and services,” the official added. “It will make location identification much more accurate.”

The Department of Posts is working with institutions like IIM and IISc Bangalore to study the new system’s impact. “We want to ensure a smooth rollout and better understanding of the ecosystem,” the official confirmed.

While the old six-digit PIN code won’t disappear right away, DIGIPIN is ready to transform how India connects. Expect a future where your address is more precise and your deliveries even faster.
