Police outreach uses sports to curb drug menace in tribal belt
In a bid to tackle the growing concern of drug-related activities in tribal areas, the Alluri Sitarama Raju district police have launched a community outreach initiative that combines sports, awareness drives and welfare measures.
The programme, spearheaded by Superintendent of Police Amit Bardar, focuses on bringing together schools, local institutions, community leaders and law enforcement agencies to build a coordinated response against the drug menace. It also aims to encourage youth participation in constructive activities and leadership roles.
As part of the initiative, a volleyball tournament was organised at Maddigaruvu village in G. Madugula mandal. Nearly 20 teams from nearby villages took part in the event, underlining strong local participation. The Maddigaruvu team clinched the first prize, winning ₹10,000 and a volleyball kit, while the Madatakonda team finished second, receiving ₹5,000 and a kit. Cricket kits were also distributed to teams from Surimetta and Boithili to promote sports among rural youth.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Paderu, R. Abhishek, who was the chief guest, urged tribal youth to stay away from ganja transportation and illegal activities. “Drug peddling can have serious health, social and legal consequences, and can derail young lives,” he said.
He also highlighted the risks of cybercrime and the importance of road safety, while encouraging students to make use of free online coaching resources for competitive examinations. “There are several opportunities available today, and youth must focus on education and building a secure future,” he added.
The outreach programme also included distribution of sarees to tribal women and study material to 35 educated youth preparing for government jobs.
Police officials said such initiatives would be continued in interior areas to build awareness, strengthen community ties and provide positive alternatives for young people.
