Rapido, AP Govt Launch Driver-Guide Service for Tourists

The State government has launched a driver-cum-guide service in partnership with bike taxi aggregator Rapido to enhance tourist convenience and improve last-mile connectivity. Tourism Minister K. Durgesh stated that drivers with high ratings on the platform will participate in a special training program in December covering the State’s history, culture, hospitality, and safety. The service will be rolled out in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati.

The initiative follows an agreement signed between Rapido and the government during the CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam. “The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Rapido, is introducing a new tourism service that enhances the visitor experience while helping cab and auto drivers increase their earnings,” Mr. Durgesh said.

Tourist autorickshaws, cabs, and information on curated circuits will be accessible through the Rapido app. Co-branded help desks will be set up at bus stations, railway stations, and airports.

Tourism experts have welcomed the move. K. Harish, a Visakhapatnam-based travel consultant, said the service could help address long-standing challenges faced by visitors. “Tourists often struggle to find reliable local guidance. Drivers trained to act as guides can make travel smoother and safer,” he said.

Industry analysts noted that integrating tourist circuits into an app-based platform could help promote lesser-known destinations. “Digital mapping allows travellers to plan better, especially in places where information is limited,” said S. Revathi, a researcher in tourism policy.

Tourists also expressed support. “Local drivers usually know the best spots, but communication can be difficult,” said Amanda Lewis, a visitor from the U.K. “If trained drivers are available through an app, it becomes much easier for travellers.”

Domestic visitors shared similar views. “A verified service with trained drivers boosts confidence, especially for families,” said Ravi Teja, a traveller from Bengaluru.

The Minister said the public-private partnership, supported by technology, is expected to serve as a national model for tourist transport and related services.
