Rise in LPG Accidents Raises Safety Concerns in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam is witnessing a worrying increase in cooking gas-related accidents, with multiple incidents reported across the city in recent months. While some mishaps have caused serious injuries, others have claimed lives, underscoring the risks associated with improper handling of LPG cylinders.

“Even with careful handling, accidents can happen,” said Harsha, a gas distributor from Kurmannapalem. “Prompt reporting of incidents is crucial to prevent further damage.”

Recent weeks have seen cylinder explosions in residential areas, particularly in densely populated localities such as MVP Colony and Gajuwaka. In one case, a cylinder blast in a Kurmannapalem apartment hospitalized two residents and caused significant property damage.

Experts note that while LPG cylinders are convenient, they carry inherent risks if safety protocols are not strictly followed. Consumers affected by accidents are eligible for insurance coverage of up to Rs 50 lakh at no cost, effective immediately upon booking a cylinder. However, awareness of this benefit remains limited. The scheme provides financial support for property damage, medical expenses, and in the event of death.

“In the event of a cylinder explosion, victims should immediately inform the nearest police station and their local LPG distributor,” Harsha advised. “The distributor will notify the relevant oil company and insurance provider, and the gas company will inspect the site to process claims.”

To claim insurance, affected individuals must submit relevant documents, including death certificates, postmortem reports, and medical bills. Coverage includes up to Rs 2 lakh for property damage, Rs 6 lakh in case of death, and Rs 2 lakh per person for medical treatment, with a maximum total of Rs 50 lakh per family.

Although the Union Petroleum Minister confirmed in 2018 that LPG explosion victims are eligible for insurance, many residents remain unaware of the scheme. Authorities continue to urge caution when using LPG cylinders and stress the importance of reporting accidents immediately.
