Safety norms must be strictly followed, says transport official
Vizianagaram Deputy Transport Commissioner D. Mani Kumar has ordered strict enforcement of safety norms for private buses, warning that violations are endangering passenger lives and delaying evacuation during accidents.
The move follows recent road accidents in Markapuram and Ramabhadrapuram, which triggered concerns over safety standards in long-distance private buses.
Speaking to The Coastal Times, Mr. Kumar said the department has intensified inspections, covering nearly 50 buses operating to major cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. Special teams have been deployed to conduct surprise checks and ensure compliance with transport regulations.
Officials found several serious violations during inspections. In many buses, emergency exit doors were blocked due to the installation of additional berths. Aisle space was also found to be severely restricted, with nearly 90% of the interior occupied by seats or sleeper berths, leaving little room for passenger movement during emergencies.
The absence of alarm systems and emergency alert mechanisms was another major concern flagged by the department. “Passengers, especially those asleep on upper berths, are unable to evacuate quickly during fire accidents or collisions,” Mr. Kumar said.
He stressed that strict adherence to safety norms — including functional emergency exits, adequate aisle space, and proper alert systems — can significantly reduce casualties. He also emphasised the role of drivers and attendants in ensuring quick and orderly evacuation during emergencies.
The transport department has warned of strict action, including penalties and suspension of permits, against operators violating safety rules. Regular monitoring and follow-up inspections will continue in the coming weeks, officials said.
