“Sakhi Suraksha” Launched to Boost Health of SHG Women in Visakhapatnam
The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department launched the “Sakhi Suraksha” program on Thursday to improve women’s health. The initiative, part of the Aarogya Andhra Pradesh mission, focuses on women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in urban areas.
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad said the program aims to strengthen the health and welfare of SHG women and encouraged eligible members to participate. “SHG women often neglect their health due to daily tasks. Sakhi Suraksha will serve as a protective health shield, starting in Visakhapatnam,” he said.
The launch took place at AU Convention Center and was attended by East Constituency MLA and MEPMA Mission Director N. Tej Bharat, GVMC UCD Project Director P.M. Satyavani, State Mission Manager N.N. Srinivas, MEPMA Project Director N. Sarojini, and a team of doctors.
Women SHG members over 35 can access free health screenings until October 26 at centers in Gajuwaka–Anakapalli, Madhurawada–Bheemunipatnam, and Pendurthi–Gnanapuram. Screenings cover 16 tests, including checks for chronic diseases, nutritional deficiencies, women’s cancers, and mental health. Identified cases will be referred to government or private hospitals, with coverage under Ayushman Bharat health insurance up to Rs 5 lakh.
East Constituency MLA praised the city’s Yogandhra initiative and proposed one health center for every two wards. The Collector welcomed the suggestion.
MEPMA Mission Director N. Tej Bharat said Sakhi Suraksha supports both economic and health security for women, complementing initiatives like “One Family – One Entrepreneur.” Participants receive a health card, access to teleconsultation, and digital storage of health data.
The program launch concluded with the unveiling of the Sakhi Suraksha poster and an inspection of 15 health screening counters.
