Scientists pledge push for alternatives to animal testing

Highlighting the need for strong quality systems in biomedical research, Dr. Varaprasad Reddy, Founder of Shantha Biotechnics Limited, said the global acceptance of biologics developed in India depends on uncompromising data integrity and reliable preclinical practices.

Dr. Reddy was speaking after inaugurating the 13th International Conference on Preclinical Insights from Animal Studies on Drug Discovery and Translational Research at GITAM Deemed to be University here on Friday. The two-day conference was organised by the Laboratory Animal Scientists’ Association (LASA), India.

Hundreds of scientists attending the conference resolved to work towards developing alternatives to laboratory animals and reducing their use in scientific research. At the same time, they acknowledged the critical role laboratory animals have played in advancing the understanding of disease mechanisms.

Dr. Reddy said high-quality laboratory animals form the backbone of preclinical testing, batch release, and regulatory compliance. Their health, genetic quality, and overall well-being, he said, directly affect the reliability of data generated for human use. He called for a balanced approach that combines scientific innovation with humane care and the faster adoption of alternatives to animal testing.

GITAM Deemed to be University Chancellor Prof. Virander Singh Chauhan said preclinical research remains essential for understanding disease processes, evaluating drug targets, and ensuring safety before clinical trials. Ethical and well-regulated animal studies, he added, continue to be an integral part of the drug discovery process.

LASA President Dr. Vijay Pal Singh said laboratory animal science plays a key role in ensuring ethical and high-quality biomedical research in India. He said LASA is promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of scientists through workshops and training programmes focused on global best practices and emerging technologies.

Scientists specialising in laboratory animal science from various central research organisations participated in the conference. GITAM Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Y. Gouthama Rao, GIMSR Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. B. Geetanjali, GITAM School of Pharmacy Principal Prof. L. Srinivas, LASA Secretary Dr. R. K. Shakthi Devan, conference organising secretaries Dr. G. Suhasin and Dr. Jerald Mahesh Kumar, conveners Dr. Nitin Yadav and Dr. Hari Shankar Nemani, and others were present at the inaugural session.
