Special unit for elderly mental health care inaugurated in Visakhapatnam
A dedicated department for the treatment of mental health disorders among senior citizens has been set up at the Government Mental Hospital here. The facility, part of the Centre for Extension, was inaugurated recently by State Health Minister Satyakumar and will serve patients aged 60 years and above.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. K.V. Ramireddy said dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, affects nearly 25 per cent of people above 60 years of age. “Many also seek treatment for alcohol dependence, loneliness, depression, and suicidal tendencies,” he noted.
Post-retirement inactivity is a significant contributor to declining mental health, Dr. Ramireddy pointed out. “When daily routines change abruptly, enthusiasm wanes and mental activity reduces, leading to conditions such as delirium. Seniors should keep their minds engaged by reading newspapers, holding discussions, solving puzzles, reading novels, going to the market, and remaining active,” he advised.
The new wing is equipped with 20 beds and facilities for blood tests, X-rays, and EEG (electroencephalogram) scans. A grievance cell will be established to identify mental health issues among the elderly. “We will offer counselling alongside treatment, provide free medicines, and refer patients to KGH for MRI and CT scans if necessary,” Dr. Ramireddy added.
