Srikakulam, Vizianagaram Officials on Alert as Cyclone ‘Montha’ Nears Coast

Officials in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram have increased readiness for Cyclone ‘Montha’. The cyclone is likely to cross the Kakinada coast on the night of October 28. Authorities said they will not take any risks this time.

Srikakulam has a 185-km coastline from Pydibhimavaram to Ichchapuram. The district has suffered heavy losses during previous cyclones, including Hudhud and Titli. Even cyclones that made landfall farther south caused damage here.

A control room is now active at the Srikakulam Collectorate. Residents can contact 08942-240557 for updates and assistance. Officials are keeping a close watch on Palasa, Sompeta, Santabommali, Kotabommali, and the Uddanam region. These areas include many cashew and coconut plantations that face a high risk.

Srikakulam in-charge Collector Farman Ahmed Khan held a teleconference with key departments. He directed all teams to maintain close coordination. He also advised fishermen to avoid the sea for a week due to expected rough waters.

Khan asked irrigation officials to track the Vamsadhara and Nagavali river levels. Flooding may become a serious concern after landfall. Officials will shift people from low-lying areas to safer places if required.

In Vizianagaram, Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy reviewed preparedness measures. He urged teams in Bhogapuram and Pusapatirega mandals to stay alert.

Both districts are preparing relief teams, shelters, and essential supplies. The administration has called for public cooperation as Cyclone ‘Montha’ approaches.
