Stealth frigate INS Taragiri to join Navy today

India’s drive towards self-reliant naval capability received a major boost with the commissioning of the indigenous stealth frigate INS Taragiri into the Indian Navy on Friday.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the warship marks a significant advancement over earlier designs, with its reduced radar cross-section and enhanced stealth features enabling it to operate with greater combat effectiveness.

The fourth frigate under Project 17A, the 6,670-tonne vessel is equipped with advanced weaponry, including supersonic BrahMos missile systems, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and a sophisticated anti-submarine warfare suite. Its induction is expected to strengthen the Navy’s operational readiness amid evolving maritime challenges.

Speaking ahead of the commissioning, Commanding Officer Captain Hemanth Gopal said the new Taragiri represents a quantum leap in capability. “The ship combines stealth, automation, superior firepower and survivability, reflecting India’s growing strength in indigenous warship design and construction,” he said.

The vessel carries forward the legacy of the earlier INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served the Navy for over three decades until 2013. The new platform, however, features modern systems and over 75 per cent indigenous content, developed with the participation of more than 200 MSMEs.

Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, the frigate is capable of high-speed, long-endurance missions and can undertake anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine operations. Officers said the ship is also equipped for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, apart from its core combat roles.

Described as one of the most advanced indigenous warships in the fleet, INS Taragiri is designed to operate across the Indian Ocean Region, enabling a rapid response during emergencies.

With its induction, the Navy adds a potent multi-role platform to its fleet, underlining India’s expanding maritime capability and commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
