Swachh Andhra Corporation to Ban Plastics in Temples; Experts Applaud Move

Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K. Pattabhi Ram on Sunday reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to introducing biodegradable alternatives and banning plastic use in all major temples across Andhra Pradesh. The announcement comes as part of the wider ‘Swarnandhra Swachhata’ cleanliness initiative aimed at promoting sustainability throughout the State.

Speaking to the media after offering prayers at the Kanipakam Vinayaka temple with his family, Mr. Pattabhi Ram said, “I prayed for the welfare and happiness of our people and the success of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s development programmes.” He added, “The people of Andhra Pradesh have complete trust in Naidu’s leadership, which alone can fulfil the poll promises despite financial crunches.”

He further explained that the ‘Swarnandhra Swachhata’ cleanliness drive would be conducted weekly across the State. “This will be a regular feature to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability. We also urge temple managements to ban plastic use immediately and adopt eco-friendly alternatives,” he appealed.

Environmental experts have welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential impact. Dr. R. Siva Kumar, an environmental scientist at Andhra University, said, “Temples are visited by thousands daily, and plastic waste from these sites contributes significantly to pollution. A ban on plastics and a shift to biodegradable materials could set a powerful example for communities across Andhra Pradesh.”

Echoing this view, Kavitha Reddy, founder of the NGO Green Visakha, noted, “This initiative aligns well with global trends towards sustainable religious practices. It can foster community awareness and participation in environmental conservation at the grassroots level.”

However, some experts caution that effective implementation and monitoring will be key. “Policy announcements are encouraging, but success depends on strict enforcement and continuous public engagement,” said Mr. Arjun Rao, a sustainability consultant based in Hyderabad.

The Swachh Andhra Corporation’s campaign seeks to blend tradition with modern environmental responsibility, aiming to make Andhra Pradesh’s temples not just places of worship but also models of eco-friendly practice.
