Tethered hot air balloon rides resume at Padmapuram Gardens in Araku

Visitors to Araku Valley now have another reason to look skyward. Tethered hot air balloon rides at Padmapuram Gardens resumed on Friday, offering tourists a chance to take in panoramic views of the valley from above.

The activity was formally launched by Tirumani Sri Pooja, Project Officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Paderu, who also released a digital poster announcing the rides. Speaking at the event, she said the initiative would enhance the tourism experience in the Agency area. “Araku has always been known for its natural beauty. The balloon rides will add a new dimension for visitors looking for something memorable,” she said.

The rides will be operated by Mega Eagle Fly. ITDA Assistant Project Officer M. Venkateswara Rao, Administrative Officer M. Hemalatha, and Mega Eagle Fly CEO G. Santosh Kumar were present at the launch.

Hot air balloon rides were first introduced in Araku last winter and received an encouraging response. However, operations were affected by weather-related disruptions and the closure of Padmapuram Gardens for renovation earlier this year. Despite these challenges, more than 600 tourists took part in the activity in its debut season.

Officials expect the current season to draw even greater numbers, particularly as Araku gears up for the festive and winter tourist rush. The renovated gardens, combined with the balloon rides, are being pitched as a highlight for both domestic and international travellers.

Local tourism stakeholders see the initiative as part of a broader push to promote adventure and leisure experiences in the Eastern Ghats. With improved connectivity and rising footfall in the valley, the addition of hot air ballooning is being viewed as a step towards diversifying attractions beyond the traditional coffee plantations, waterfalls and tribal museum visits.
