Visakha Utsav to return in a larger week-long format

The State government has announced that Visakha Utsav will return in an expanded format, combining the Bheemili and Araku festivals into a week-long programme. With this decision, the Bheemili Utsav, set for November 29 and 30, and the Araku Utsav, planned for January 2 to 4, have been cancelled. The goal is to present one consolidated festival that can draw a wider audience.

Visakha Utsav has been a major tourism event in coastal Andhra Pradesh for more than two decades. Introduced in the late 1990s by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department, it was created to highlight the region’s culture, cuisine, crafts and natural attractions. Over the years, it has played an important role in promoting Visakhapatnam through performances, exhibitions, and outdoor activities.

The Bheemili and Araku segments were originally part of the festival. The previous government separated and later discontinued them. The current coalition government has directed tourism officials to restore the unified structure to strengthen tourism across the district. MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao and District Collector Alluri Seetharama Raju have reviewed the proposal and supported the plan.

Earlier, the festival ran for three days in December to align with Christmas and weekend holidays. Activities included treasure hunts at the Erramatti Dibbalu in Bheemili, balloon festivals in Araku and helicopter tourism. The government now plans to extend the schedule to at least five days, possibly a full week, with larger attractions and a decorated Christmas tree.

Funding remains a concern, as the tourism department is facing budget shortages. Efforts to secure the required funds are underway, and the government is expected to issue an announcement soon. The expanded Visakha Utsav aims to strengthen the city’s tourism appeal and offer residents and visitors a richer cultural experience.
