Visakhapatnam City Police Wins SKOCH Award for Road Accident Victim Assistance Centre

The Visakhapatnam City Police won the prestigious SKOCH Award for its Road Traffic Accident Victim Assistance Center. The award recognized the centre’s exceptional services. It was presented at the 102nd SKOCH Awards in Delhi on September 20, 2025.

The centre opened on December 8, 2024. Notably, it is India’s first facility dedicated to victims of hit-and-run accidents. Therefore, it provides immediate support to affected families. For instance, families of deceased victims receive Rs 2 lakh. Similarly, seriously injured victims get Rs 50,000 while awaiting government compensation.

Dr. Shankhabrata Bhagchi, City Police Commissioner, said, “We established the centre to provide relief and guidance, especially when the responsible vehicle is unknown. Moreover, we want victims to avoid delays in accessing compensation and documents.”

The centre also helps victims obtain essential documents, including F.I.Rs, injury certificates, and post-mortem reports. Furthermore, it provides all forms required for compensation free of cost. In addition, police staff assist applicants in completing them. Each case is closely monitored by a designated constable from submission to the revenue authorities and finally to the District Collector’s office.

Since April 1, 2022, the centre has facilitated Rs 63,50,000 in compensation through the General Insurance Council, Mumbai. Meanwhile, 106 applications remain under inquiry. Victims and families can contact the centre via its toll-free number, 7995095793, for guidance and documents.

Victims expressed their gratitude for the centre’s support. “The assistance centre was a lifeline for us during a very difficult time,” said one beneficiary. Additionally, police officials praised Dr. Bhagchi. They described the centre as a vital support service for road accident victims in the city.
