Visakhapatnam Port handles record 85 MMT of cargo
Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has set a new benchmark by handling 85.07 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in just 345 days of the current financial year, the highest volume in its 92-year history. The Port is on track to surpass its official target of 90 MMT by the end of the year.
Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairperson of VPA, said the milestone reflects the Port’s operational efficiency, strategic planning, and close coordination with shipping lines, logistics partners, and other stakeholders. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our staff and the cooperation of all partners, we are confident of achieving 100 MMT in 2026–27,” he added.
Over the years, VPA has achieved several key milestones, including the commissioning of modern cargo-handling equipment, the expansion of berths to accommodate larger vessels, and the development of dedicated terminals for coal, iron ore, and containers. The Port has also embraced digital initiatives, such as online cargo tracking and port community systems, which have significantly improved operational efficiency and reduced turnaround times.
VPA’s performance highlights its growing cargo-handling capacity and its contribution to India’s trade and logistics sector. Officials note sustained growth across major cargo segments, including iron ore, coal, crude oil, and containers, which has driven this record throughput.
These achievements reinforce Visakhapatnam Port’s position as a major maritime gateway on India’s east coast, capable of handling increasing trade volumes efficiently while maintaining high standards of operational excellence.
