Visakhapatnam shivers as winter chill triggers spike in seasonal illnesses

Visakhapatnam has been waking up to a sharp drop in morning temperatures over the past week, leading to a noticeable rise in seasonal ailments across the city. Clinics and outpatient departments are seeing longer queues as residents report fever, cold, and persistent cough.

Health officials note that senior citizens are bearing the brunt of the sudden change in weather. Many elderly patients have complained of breathing discomfort and fatigue. “Older people, especially those with asthma, diabetes or heart disease, are more vulnerable at this time. We are seeing a clear increase in cases over the past few days,” said a general physician at a city clinic.

Doctors are urging residents to take preventive measures instead of waiting for symptoms to worsen. “A warm layer of clothing in the morning, proper hydration and immunity-boosting foods can reduce the risk. People tend to ignore the early signs of illness, which leads to complications,” another doctor said.

Medical practitioners also stressed the need for nutritious food during winter. “A healthy diet with vegetables, fruits, ginger, turmeric and protein helps the body cope with seasonal viruses. Avoiding roadside food and cold drinks can make a difference,” advised a paediatrician.

Authorities expect cases to continue rising for a few more days if temperatures remain low. Residents are being encouraged to consult a doctor early if symptoms persist.
