Visakhapatnam to Develop Four Theme-Based Townships in Push for Sustainable Urban Growth
VMRDA unveils plans for specialized, self-sustained urban clusters focused on innovation, eco-resilience, and job creation to transform the coastal city into a global smart hub
The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has revealed an ambitious blueprint to develop four specialized townships within its jurisdiction, aiming to transform the coastal city into a cutting-edge hub of innovation and sustainability.
Two locations have been earmarked for the initial rollout: Kothavalasa village in Bheemunipatnam mandal and Sontyam village in Anandapuram mandal. The sites for the remaining two townships are still under consideration as officials evaluate suitable land parcels.
In a joint statement, VMRDA Chairman M.V. Pranav Gopal and Metropolitan Commissioner K.S. Viswanathan detailed plans to create integrated, self-contained urban clusters, each anchored by distinct themes such as IT & Innovation, Health & Wellness, Knowledge & Education, Tourism & Culture, Logistics & Trade, and Eco-Resilience.
“These townships will incorporate dedicated zones designed to attract focused investments and specialized talent pools,” Mr. Viswanathan explained. “The core of these developments will be smart infrastructure that prioritizes sustainability, advanced technology, and the well-being of residents.”
Each township is envisioned as a dynamic employment center, fostering job creation and entrepreneurship tailored to its thematic focus. Environmental stewardship is a key pillar, with an emphasis on eco-friendly architecture, renewable energy adoption, and integrated water management systems. Cultural preservation will also play a prominent role, weaving Andhra Pradesh’s rich traditions into public art, crafts, and community spaces.
Viswanathan highlighted Visakhapatnam’s strategic advantages—its natural harbour, strong connectivity, and geopolitical importance—as factors making it an ideal setting for this innovation-led urban model. The project aims to draw both domestic and international investment, potentially generating between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs while significantly enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Gopal added that the development would leverage public-private partnerships and hybrid frameworks, enlisting expertise from national and global urban planners, architects, and engineers. “Environmental sustainability, inclusiveness, and community engagement will be foundational throughout the planning and implementation process,” he said.
This initiative forms part of VMRDA’s larger vision to position Visakhapatnam as a modern, sustainable, and globally competitive bay city—reflecting India’s accelerating commitment to smart, future-ready urban development.
