Vizag erupts in celebration as India lifts T20 World Cup
Visakhapatnam burst into celebrations on Sunday night as cricket lovers rejoiced after India defeated New Zealand to win the ICC T20 World Cup. Firecrackers lit up the sky, bike rallies were taken out on several roads, and enthusiastic fans gathered in large numbers at public screening venues, cafes, and apartment complexes to celebrate the victory.
The port city, which had been gripped by cricket fever throughout the day, turned festive moments after the final ball was bowled. Fans waved the national flag, shouted slogans in support of Team India, and danced on the streets in several localities, including Dwaraka Nagar, MVP Colony, Gajuwaka, and Madhurawada.
Several restaurants, breweries, and resorts that organised special match screenings reported packed venues. Apartment associations and gated communities had also set up large screens for residents, turning the World Cup final into a shared neighbourhood celebration.
Youth groups in many colonies pooled funds to arrange street screenings, drawing large crowds. Cheers erupted each time Indian players delivered match-winning performances.
“We were confident India would win today. The team played fearless cricket throughout the tournament,” said V. Navadheer, a cricket enthusiast from the city. “Watching the final with friends on a big screen made the victory even more special.”
City-based cricket coach P. Srinivas said the victory reflected the depth and balance of the Indian squad in the shortest format of the game.
“The team showed great composure in the final. The batting unit attacked from the start, and the bowlers maintained tight control,” he said. “It is encouraging to see young players performing confidently on the world stage.”
Beachside restaurants and cafes also saw large crowds as fans gathered to watch the match together. Several venues reported that tables were fully booked hours before the start of the final.
For many families, the match became a special Sunday night event. “We finished all our work early and watched the match together as a family,” said G. Rajeswari, a resident of Sheela Nagar. “When India won, everyone in our apartment complex came out and celebrated. It felt like a festival.”
Police said traffic slowed briefly in some areas as youngsters celebrated the victory on the roads, though the celebrations remained largely peaceful.
Cricket lovers in the city said the World Cup triumph was a proud moment for the country and a memorable night for fans in Visakhapatnam, who celebrated the victory with unmatched enthusiasm.
