Vizag to deploy AI traffic system at 102 junctions by April 2026
In a major smart city upgrade, Visakhapatnam will roll out an AI-powered traffic management system across the city under Project SARTHI, replacing fixed signal timers with real-time intelligent controls to cut congestion and improve road safety.
The Rs 60–65 crore project will cover 102 junctions and 56 major corridors, including RK Beach Road, with over 2,000 high-end cameras. The system is scheduled to go live by April 2026.
Ketan Garg, Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, said officials will visit Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad from February 25 to study best practices before final implementation.
The project combines Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) technology with an AI-driven Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS). Signals will automatically adjust based on real-time traffic density, reducing wait time at red lights and easing bottlenecks.
The system will also use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Red-Light Violation Detection (RLVD) to identify vehicles, catch signal violators and issue e-challans instantly.
“With SARTHI, Visakhapatnam will see faster travel, smarter signals and real-time enforcement,” Mr. Garg said, adding that the project aligns with global smart city standards.
Similar systems are already in place in major cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai, while Thiruvananthapuram runs one of the most advanced models in India integrating facial recognition with traffic flow monitoring.
GVMC officials said insights from the study tour will help fine-tune SARTHI before its full rollout across Vizag.
