Waltair Division crosses 100 MT freight in record time

The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has crossed the 100 million tonnes freight mark in the current financial year, setting a new operational record and surpassing its previous best performance.

Railway officials said the division moved 100.38 million tons of freight in just 256 days as of December 12, 2025, much faster than the 288 days it took to reach the same milestone in the 2023–24 financial year. The achievement highlights a sharp rise in efficiency and growing freight demand across the region.

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra credited the feat to close coordination among Operations, Commercial, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering departments, supported by the sustained efforts of frontline staff. He said the quicker turnaround reflects the division’s strengthened freight-handling capacity and its ability to deliver consistent performance despite increasing traffic volumes.

Loading accounted for 56.60 million tonnes, driven largely by iron ore, coal, minerals, and steel, which form the backbone of industrial freight. Unloading stood at 43.78 million tonnes, ensuring smooth distribution and uninterrupted supply to industries, ports, and power plants.

Officials said improved rake mobility, reduced terminal detention, and tighter monitoring of turnaround times played a crucial role in achieving the milestone. Continuous coordination with industrial stakeholders and port authorities further streamlined operations.

Serving key industrial clusters, major ports, and thermal power stations, the Waltair Division remains one of the most vital freight corridors on the East Coast Railway network, underpinning regional growth and strengthening national supply chains.
