Waltair Division steps up safety checks ahead of Diwali travel rush
With Diwali around the corner, thousands of passengers are preparing to travel home to celebrate the festival with family and friends. In view of the heavy festive rush, the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has issued an advisory to ensure passenger safety and prevent untoward incidents.
To handle the surge in passenger movement, the Division has intensified safety checks and enforcement against carrying firecrackers or any inflammable materials on trains. Officials reminded that transporting such items is strictly prohibited under the Railway Act, as it poses a serious threat to passengers.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra said special squads have been deployed at stations and on trains under the Waltair Division to maintain strict vigilance during the festive season. These teams include Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, Government Railway Police (GRP) staff, and ticket-checking officials.
They will conduct surprise checks on platforms, parcel offices, and inside trains to detect and prevent the movement of banned or dangerous goods such as crackers and gas cylinders.
Mr. Bohra said the inspection teams have been directed to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violators. “Even a small spark from firecrackers can cause major damage in a confined space like a train coach. We urge passengers to act responsibly and cooperate with railway staff,” he said.
The Division has also appealed to passengers to refrain from carrying inflammable items and to report any suspicious activity or objects to the nearest RPF or GRP personnel, or through railway helplines.
“Passenger safety is our top priority. We request everyone’s cooperation to ensure a safe and joyous Diwali for all,” Mr. Bohra added.
