Waltair Division takes precautions ahead of Cyclone ‘Monta’

The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has activated precautionary measures ahead of Cyclone ‘Monta’, expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds.

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra said bridges, tracks, yards, and signalling systems are under constant surveillance. Catchment areas and drains are being cleared to prevent waterlogging, and the division is coordinating with district authorities for prompt action in emergencies.

Patrol staff have been deployed at vulnerable locations, with additional teams on standby. Control rooms and disaster management cells are functioning round-the-clock, while essential materials for track repairs have been stocked.

Help desks will operate from Monday at Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam Road, Duvvada, and Rayagada stations. Extra counters will handle ticket refunds in case of cancellations. Catering units have been instructed to maintain adequate supplies, and backup power arrangements are in place.

Medical personnel, ambulances, and first-aid facilities will be available at major stations. Civil Defence volunteers and Scouts and Guides members have been alerted to assist during emergencies. Special teams are positioned for restoration of tracks, electrification, and signalling systems, with diesel locomotives on standby.

Mr. Bohra said track patrolling has been planned to detect hazards early. Mobile and stationary patrol teams will monitor flood-prone stretches, and gangmen will inspect tracks during heavy rain. Engineering relief vans and bridge repair materials have been kept ready for immediate deployment.

Passenger announcements are being made frequently, and SMS alerts have been sent to update travelers on cancellations, diversions, and rescheduled services.

The division said it is taking all necessary steps to ensure safe train operations while supporting passengers as the cyclone affects the region.
