Winter Draws Families to Visakhapatnam’s Scenic Spots
Visakhapatnam is seeing a steady rise in family outings and picnics as the winter chill sets in, with the city’s most scenic locations drawing large crowds, especially on weekends.
Popular destinations such as RK Beach, Rushikonda, Yarada Beach, and Tenneti Park are witnessing heavy footfall as families gather to enjoy the sea breeze and open spaces. Hilltop spots, including Kailasagiri, Dolphin’s Nose, and the Simhachalam foothills, are also attracting visitors for their panoramic views and cooler temperatures.
Many families are opting for short day trips to Borra Caves, Katiki Waterfalls, and parts of the Araku Valley, which offer a blend of natural beauty and comfortable travel.
“Winter is the most preferred season for outdoor activities in Visakhapatnam. The weather is pleasant, and people are more willing to spend long hours outside with their families,” said a senior tourism department official.
The seasonal trend has also led to a noticeable boost in the catering business. Caterers and event organisers report an increase in small-party orders for picnics, birthday celebrations, and informal get-togethers. “We are getting more requests for picnic-friendly menus that are easy to serve and suit all age groups,” said S. Ravi, a local caterer. “Weekends are almost fully booked during this season.”
Tourism and hospitality experts say the growth reflects a broader shift towards short, local outings. “Families are choosing nearby scenic spots instead of long-distance travel. It is convenient, cost-effective, and ideal for elderly members,” said travel consultant P. Anitha.
With mild temperatures expected to continue over the next few weeks, officials and industry stakeholders anticipate sustained footfall at Visakhapatnam’s scenic locations through the winter season.
