Yarada Beach: Visakhapatnam’s Hidden Gem of Serenity by the Sea
Tucked beneath the towering Dolphin’s Nose, Yarada Beach remains a hidden sanctuary for those seeking peace and solitude. Unlike the city’s more crowded shores, it has largely escaped commercialisation, retaining its natural charm.
Surrounded on three sides by lush hills and opening onto the vast Bay of Bengal, the beach offers a serene landscape. Visitors often speak of the sunrise, painting the waters in gold and crimson, as a memory that lingers long after they leave.
Yarada’s location carries historical significance. The nearby Dolphin’s Nose, rising nearly 174 metres, has been a key maritime landmark for centuries. British records cite it as vital for navigation, and the lighthouse atop the cliff continues to guide vessels entering Visakhapatnam harbour. Protected by its geography, Yarada has remained largely untouched despite the city’s rapid urban growth.
For many residents, the beach offers an escape from the city’s noise. “Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I come here. There are no crowds, no vendors, just the sound of the waves,” says Pradeep Kumar, a college student who visits on weekends.
Families also cherish the beach. “We pack food and spend the day here. The children play in the sand while we enjoy the sea breeze,” says Anuradha, a homemaker from Gajuwaka.
The journey to Yarada adds to its charm. The winding road along green hills offers panoramic sea views, setting the tone even before the first glimpse of the beach.
At a time when much of Visakhapatnam’s coastline is being developed with parks, eateries, and entertainment zones, Yarada stands out as a rare stretch where nature still dominates. It remains a retreat for picnickers, solitude-seekers, and anyone wishing to listen to the gentle rhythm of the waves.
As the city grows, the question remains how long Yarada can remain untouched. For now, its appeal lies in what it has preserved: a quiet communion with the sea, framed by hills, under the watchful eye of the Dolphin’s Nose.
