Andhra University Professor Selected for Prestigious U.S. Leadership Program
Prof. Meka James Stephen, Chair Professor of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair at Andhra University, has been selected to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States. He will be the sole representative from India in this edition, scheduled from September 27 to October 18, 2025.
Launched in 1940, the IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s flagship professional exchange program. It brings together emerging and established leaders from around the world to explore American political, economic, social, and cultural life, fostering global cooperation and mutual understanding.
Speaking to The Coastal Times, Prof. Stephen said, “The IVLP is not just a professional program. It is an opportunity to engage with global leaders and bring international perspectives back home. I am honoured to represent India and Andhra University on such a prestigious platform.”
The program’s alumni include distinguished global figures such as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, former Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat, and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its network also spans Nobel Laureates, Cabinet Ministers, and leading personalities in business, science, and education.
Andhra University, celebrating its Centenary Year, welcomed the announcement. “Prof. Stephen’s selection is a proud moment for the University. It reflects our commitment to fostering academic excellence and international engagement,” said a University spokesperson.
The Dr. Ambedkar Foundation, under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, also congratulated Prof. Stephen. “This recognition brings honour not only to the nation but also to the Foundation and the Ministry,” the statement said.
Participation in the IVLP is widely regarded as a mark of leadership and vision. Experts note that Prof. Stephen’s involvement will help strengthen India’s intellectual and cultural engagement with the world while highlighting Andhra University’s growing global presence.
