Robotic Surgery Facility Opens at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital
The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC) in Visakhapatnam inaugurated a robotic surgery facility on Thursday and performed its first robotic procedure, marking a step towards expanding access to advanced cancer treatment in the region.
The facility is now open to patients, including beneficiaries of the NTR Vaidya Seva Trust, and services are available at subsidised rates. The initiative aims to make precision-based surgical treatment more accessible to a wider section of patients.
The robotic surgery equipment was acquired with corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding from NTPC Simhadri.
Ayaskanta Jena, Head of Project at NTPC Simhadri, attended the inauguration as the chief guest. He highlighted the power producer’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and improving public access to specialised medical services.
Dr Umesh Mahantshetty, Director of HBCH&RC, said the introduction of robotic surgery was an important step towards strengthening comprehensive cancer care in the region. He added that the surgical team would use the technology’s enhanced precision to provide advanced treatment to a larger number of cancer patients.
Dr Manish S Bhandare, Senior Consultant at Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai, also attended, along with members of the hospital’s surgical team, consultants, doctors and staff.
