Visakhapatnam homeowners turn idle spaces into tourist-friendly homestays
Homeowners in Visakhapatnam now have an opportunity to turn vacant rooms, apartments, or villas into a source of income, thanks to the tourism department’s homestay initiative. The system allows tourists to stay for a few days, prepare their own meals, and pay a daily fee for accommodation, offering visitors a more personal and homely experience compared to hotels.
The city has seen a growing interest in the scheme, which aligns with the tourism department’s new policy for 2025-29. Under the guidelines, property owners with one to six rooms can register online at aptourism.gov.in or reach out to the department on the fifth floor of the VMRDA building for assistance.
District Tourist Officer J. Madhavi said, “People can contact us for any information at 0891-2754715.” Around 70 residents have already expressed interest in hosting tourists, and the department plans to hold a workshop to guide homeowners on permissions and property management.
B. Srinivas, managing Vizag Urban Nest in Akkayyapalem, shared his experience: “We initially planned to sell our flats in Akkayyapalem, but the homestay system seemed different and appealing. We started with flats in Kancharapalem and now offer two flats in Akkayyapalem as homestays. Tourists can cook their own meals or we provide what they need. The flats have all facilities, including bedrooms and AC. Many tourists find us through the website or acquaintances, and we arrange guides and local visits for them.”
Similarly, Renugupta, a homestay manager in Siripuram, said, “We use some rooms and the upper floors of our house for homestays. Instead of long-term rentals, we thought offering them to tourists would be better. Along with daily rent, we charge a small service fee. Tourists have access to a gas stove and cooking utensils, and we provide additional items if needed. Many prefer this over hotels because it is more affordable and gives a homely experience. It is also enjoyable to learn about the visitors’ culture and traditions. We shared our experience recently during a video conference with CM Chandrababu Naidu.”
The homestay initiative is aimed at boosting tourism in the city while providing homeowners with an alternative source of income, making it a mutually beneficial venture for both residents and visitors.
