Google to Build India’s Largest AI Data Centre in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam will soon host India’s largest AI data centre. Google announced a partnership with Adani Enterprises and Airtel. The project will unfold from 2026 to 2030. It will feature a 1-GW hyperscale data centre, advanced green energy systems, and an expanded fiber-optic network.

The $15 billion investment will generate around Rs 10,000 crore in revenue for Andhra Pradesh. It will create 5,000–6,000 direct jobs. In total, it could provide 20,000–30,000 employment opportunities in the state. The project will boost the local economy and strengthen Visakhapatnam’s IT ecosystem.

Industry leaders have welcomed the announcement. The Andhra Pradesh Technology Industries Network (APDTI) said the project could make Visakhapatnam the “Silicon Coast of India.” It could attract global tech companies, startups, and innovators. APDTI Chairman Sreedhar Kosaraju said the project would create opportunities in AI, data science, and other digital technologies. He added that AdaniConnex and Airtel would provide sustainable energy solutions and next-generation connectivity.

O. Naresh Kumar, Vice-President of the Rushikonda IT Park Association, said the investment would improve city infrastructure. Roads, flyovers, and urban facilities will benefit. He also noted that water and energy needs are being planned carefully. Projects like the Polavaram water initiative and the Green Hydrogen hub will support the city’s growth.

Some experts have expressed caution. Ranjith, a network engineer, said AI data centres require few staff. However, they demand large amounts of power and water. He warned that without environmental safeguards, the facilities could strain local resources.

The announcement has generated excitement. However, experts say careful planning is needed. Visakhapatnam must balance rapid technological growth with environmental sustainability. Doing so will ensure the city benefits from the investment while protecting local resources.
