Drones and AI take the lead in GVMC’s drive for a cleaner Visakhapatnam
Keeping a city clean is a constant challenge. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is now using drones and artificial intelligence (AI) to make the task easier. These tools help monitor sanitation across neighbourhoods, identify violators, and take swift action.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg explained that drones capture real-time footage, which is analysed at the City Operation Centre (COC) using AI. “While our SHE teams manage litter on the ground, specially trained enforcement teams can quickly identify and penalise those who violate sanitation rules,” he said.
At the COC, officials can track garbage collection, dustbin placement, and illegal waste disposal in any area. The system allows them to respond quickly to problem spots and fix issues before conditions get worse.
Local residents are already seeing the benefits. “Earlier, garbage often piled up for days,” said Ramesh, a shopkeeper in MVP Colony. “Now, with regular monitoring, the streets are cleaner and there is more accountability.”
Mr. Garg added that drones and AI make it easier to identify individuals or traders dumping waste irresponsibly. Violators may face fines and, in serious cases, cancellation of trade licences. “Strict enforcement is essential to maintain a clean and healthy urban environment,” he said.
By combining technology with on-ground action, GVMC aims to set a benchmark in urban sanitation. The initiative complements the work of SHE teams and volunteers while encouraging citizens to take responsibility for their surroundings. For residents, the result is clear: cleaner streets, better hygiene, and a city that reflects their collective efforts.
