Swift Relief Operations by GVMC After Cyclone Montha
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) moved quickly to tackle the damage caused by Cyclone Montha, which brought three days of heavy rain and strong winds to the city.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said emergency teams worked round the clock to clear debris and support affected residents. The City Operations Center received 229 complaints, of which 224 were resolved on the spot.
To ensure safety in vulnerable areas, officials set up 79 rehabilitation centers for people living in low-lying and hillside zones. So far, 293 residents have been shifted to 13 relief centers, where they are being provided with food, water, and medical aid.
Restoration efforts were carried out across the city. Crews removed 157 of 160 uprooted trees and reopened most major roads to traffic. The Electrical Department repaired 10 damaged streetlights, while sanitation workers cleared 20 blocked drainage lines and 30 flood-prone spots to reduce waterlogging.
Eight compound walls collapsed in different parts of Visakhapatnam, but GVMC teams cleared the debris within hours.
Although the cyclone has weakened, light rain continues in several areas. Mr. Garg urged residents to stay alert and report any emergencies, assuring that officials are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring and responding immediately wherever needed.
He praised GVMC staff for their tireless work during the crisis and directed teams to resolve the remaining issues in all wards to restore normal life in the city as soon as possible.
