Realising Ambedkar’s Vision in the 21st Century
India must fully realise the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in the 21st century, said Amit Yadav, Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, while inaugurating a national conference of Ambedkar Chairs on Friday. The two-day event at the IIM-Visakhapatnam campus brought together scholars and representatives from universities nationwide. Mr. Yadav participated virtually as the chief guest.
The conference, organised by the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair at Andhra University in collaboration with the Ambedkar Chair at IIM-Visakhapatnam, with support from the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation, focused on “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Indian Constitution: Pathways to Social Justice, Equality, and Inclusive Development in Contemporary India.”
Mr. Yadav emphasised that social justice extends beyond welfare to include empowerment, education, gender equity, and equal opportunities. Marking the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, he urged reflection on achievements and the work still required to implement Ambedkar’s ideals fully. He added that Ministry initiatives aim to convert these principles into policies that strengthen education, economic participation, and dignity for marginalised communities.
During the event, he launched the National Online Portal of Dr. Ambedkar Chairs, commending Prof. James Stephen of Andhra University for developing it swiftly.
Highlighting Ambedkar’s contributions to women’s education, labour welfare, and property rights, Ajit Acharya, Chairman of VDM–India on the Move, called for enhanced female representation and described Ambedkar as a reformer whose ideas remain relevant. V. Apparao, Member Secretary of the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation, urged annual conferences to encourage collaboration, while Manoj Tiwari, Director of the Foundation, said the sessions would foster research and new insights.
Prof. M. James Stephen, convener, called the gathering a significant intellectual platform, particularly during Andhra University’s centenary. The programme also featured addresses by Prof. Chandrasekhar, Director of IIM-Visakhapatnam, and other dignitaries.
