Visakhapatnam railway station gets 220 digital LED screens

In a major step towards improving passenger communication and enhancing station ambience, the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has installed 220 digital LED display screens across Visakhapatnam railway station. The initiative comes under a new commercial advertisement contract aimed at combining technological upgrades with revenue generation.

Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra inaugurated the digital display network on Wednesday in the presence of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager K. Pavan Kumar, Divisional Commercial Manager Pooja Singh, and other officials. The team also inspected various parts of the station to review screen placement and performance.

Speaking on the occasion, Bohra said the initiative forms part of the division’s broader effort to modernize passenger facilities and expand digital systems. He noted that the five-year contract, valid until 2030, would ensure consistent revenue for the division while providing advertisers a sustained platform. The digital screens have been strategically placed at high-footfall locations such as entry areas, concourses, waiting halls, foot over-bridges and major pillars, together covering nearly 2,000 square feet of display space.

Officials explained that the digital setup operates on a 50:50 time-sharing model—half the time is reserved for railway announcements and half for commercial advertisements. This system, they said, ensures essential updates on train movements, operational changes and emergency notifications reach passengers swiftly. The network will be particularly useful during cyclones, large gatherings, accidents and other disruptions when real-time communication is vital.

The upgraded display network is expected to enhance passenger awareness, reduce confusion during rush hours and support smoother crowd management. Officials added that the aesthetically designed screens also contribute to improving the overall look and feel of Visakhapatnam railway station.
