Transport dept. steps up fire-safety checks on buses ahead of Sankranti

Amid frequent reports of bus fires, the Transport Department has stepped up inspections of travel buses ahead of Sankranti.

Officials said passenger movement to Visakhapatnam increases during the festival season, leading to a rise in the number of buses in operation. Inspection teams have been deployed to check vehicle fitness, engines, brakes, and electrical wiring.

Authorities said buses earlier kept off the roads were being brought back into service, and some could be operating without valid fitness certificates or required permits. Officials have been directed to act against violations.

Inspections are also focusing on emergency exits. Officials said a 12-metre bus must have a service door, a driver-side window, an emergency exit, and emergency windows, and all must function properly. Operators have been instructed to mark emergency exits clearly.

The department reiterated that buses must carry fire extinguishers and emergency hammers. Two hammers must be provided — one near the driver-side window and another near the emergency exit. Officials said large buses should also have vents at the front and rear to allow smoke to escape in the event of a fire.

Transport authorities warned operators against carrying hazardous materials and using decorative items that could increase fire risk.

Passengers have been advised to check safety arrangements before booking and boarding. They may report deficiencies to district transport officials, including cases where long-distance buses operate without two drivers, instances of suspected drunk driving, or overspeeding.

Deputy Transport Commissioner RCH Srinivas said inspection teams were conducting daily checks in Gajuwaka, Kurmannapalem, and Anakapalle. He added that officials were examining complaints of overcharging and creating awareness about fire-safety measures.
