Kanuma festivities trigger rush across city
Kanuma celebrations saw a surge in activity across the city on Friday (January 16, 2026), with meat shops, fish markets, and public spaces witnessing heavy crowds as families marked the third day of Sankranti festivities.
Queues formed outside chicken and mutton outlets from 5.30 am, with vendors reporting brisk sales. Chicken was sold at around 300 per kg, while mutton touched nearly 1,000 per kg. Traders said demand was far higher than on regular days, with families buying in bulk for Kanuma feasts. Many customers purchased between two and five kilograms of meat. Some residents pre-booked meat and fish on Thursday (January 15) to avoid the rush.
The fishing harbour also saw heavy footfall, with customers thronging stalls for fish and prawns. Many complained of unusually high prices, attributing the hike to festival demand. Sales continued despite the rates.
In the evening, Beach Road drew large crowds, with people flying kites and enjoying the weather. Sankranti releases in theatres continued to run to packed houses, while tourist spots also recorded steady footfall.
Meanwhile, wine shops reported brisk sales, with officials and traders expecting the rush to continue on Saturday (January 17), Mukkanuma, and Sunday (January 18), due to the extended holiday.
In Anakapalli district, bullock cart and horse races were organised at Munagapaka, drawing a large turnout.
