Dy CM seeks tough curbs on pollution in Visakhapatnam

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has called for strict measures to rein in pollution levels in Visakhapatnam, stressing that rapid industrial growth must not come at the cost of public health.

Chairing a review meeting on Friday with officials and industrial representatives under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, he discussed steps to strengthen environmental safeguards and improve pollution control systems across the region.

He said industries must adhere to PCB norms without exception and play a role in conserving biodiversity. He also pushed for the use of modern technology in waste management, the improvement of air quality, and the adoption of effective pollution mitigation practices.

“North Andhra’s coastal belt has seen fast development, but air quality has worsened. Though there has been some improvement over the past two years, the situation in places like Tadi village in the Parawada industrial zone is still alarming,” he said.

The Deputy CM noted that pollution from chemical units had severely affected residents of Tadi village, with many households reporting cancer cases. Skin ailments among children, miscarriages among women, and lung-related diseases have become common, he said.

He also pointed to pollution linked to operations at the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, stating that coal dust in port areas was contributing to respiratory and skin problems in nearby localities. Residents have repeatedly brought these issues to his notice, he added.

Pawan Kalyan said industries must take responsibility for improving living standards in industrial belts through proper waste handling and safer practices that protect surrounding communities.

Reaffirming that the NDA government gives top priority to environmental protection, he said enforcement would be strengthened while encouraging industries to adopt cleaner technologies.

Among those present were Principal Secretary (Forests and Environment) Kanthilal Dande, PCB Chairman Dr P. Krishnaiyya, APPCB Member Secretary Saravanan, Visakhapatnam Port Vice-Chairperson Roshini Aparanji, District Collector MN Harendra Prasad, and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, along with other officials.
