Waaree to set up India’s largest Li-ion battery plant in Rambilli

In a major boost to India’s clean-energy manufacturing sector, Waaree Energies has committed to establishing the country’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory at Rambilli in Anakapalli district. The company plans to invest ₹8,175 crore in the project.

According to an official release, the greenfield facility will have a capacity of 16 GWh. Moreover, the plant will cover the entire battery value chain. It will include cell manufacturing, battery pack assembly, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The State Investment Promotion Board has granted in-principle approval for the proposal.

Welcoming the investment, IT & HRD Minister Nara Lokesh said the project marks a significant step in Andhra Pradesh’s clean-energy journey. He added that the facility will become India’s largest battery manufacturing plant. Furthermore, he noted that it will help reduce import dependence while strengthening domestic manufacturing.

The Minister also said the project aligns with the State government’s vision. Specifically, Andhra Pradesh aims to build a fully integrated clean-energy ecosystem spanning power generation, equipment manufacturing, and energy storage.

Under the Integrated Clean Energy Policy, Andhra Pradesh has already attracted substantial investments in renewable energy and solar manufacturing. In this context, Mr. Lokesh described the Waaree gigafactory as the next step in backward integration into advanced energy storage.

He emphasised that large-scale battery manufacturing is essential. It will support renewable energy expansion, accelerate electric mobility adoption, and enhance grid stability.
