Historic Kidney Transplant Performed at Rural Srikakulam Hospital

The Kidney Research Center and Super Speciality Hospitals in Srikakulam achieved a medical milestone on Friday by performing a successful kidney transplant. Dr. T. Ravi Raju, hospital mentor, supervised the procedure. Usually, such surgeries take place in major cities, but this marks the first time a rural speciality hospital in India performed one.

The patient, a 23-year-old woman, developed kidney failure after childbirth. She had undergone dialysis for five months. Fortunately, her father passed the compatibility tests and agreed to donate his kidney. Thanks to his decision, doctors could proceed with the transplant.

A team of specialists carried out the complex five-hour surgery. Nephrologists Dr. Sarat Jyotsna and Dr. Rakesh led the medical part, while surgeons Dr. Ch Umamaheswara Rao, Dr. P. Purnachandra Rao, and Dr. M. Vivekananda handled the operation. Both the donor and recipient are recovering well.

Dr. Ravi Raju, former Vice Chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, emphasized the achievement. “This milestone proves that advanced organ transplants can now succeed outside major cities. It gives hope to patients in rural areas who lack access to specialised healthcare,” he said.

Moreover, the patient’s father expressed his relief and gratitude. “Seeing my daughter healthy again is the greatest gift. We thank the doctors and hospital team for making this possible in our town,” he said.

The hospital plans to expand its transplant services. Consequently, patients from smaller towns and rural areas will have better access to life-saving procedures. This development could significantly improve healthcare delivery in the region.
