Medical drone makes emergency landing, triggers panic

A medical drone made an emergency landing in agricultural fields near Boyithili village in G. Madugula mandal, triggering panic among tribals in Alluri Sitharama Raju district on Friday.

According to sources, the drone, operated by Redwing, was on a test run to deliver medicines to remote Agency areas. It took off from Paderu and was heading towards G. Madugula when it reportedly went out of control mid-flight, prompting immediate corrective action by the operators.

Drone operators said they detected a technical snag during the flight and quickly diverted the drone away from habitations to avoid any risk to life. The drone eventually descended into farmland on the outskirts of the village. It reportedly attempted to land on a tree before coming down, sustaining minor damage in the process.

The drone is part of an ongoing pilot project aimed at strengthening emergency medical services in tribal and remote regions. The initiative seeks to enable the rapid transport of essential medicines, vaccines, and medical supplies between hospitals in Araku, Paderu, and neighbouring mandals. Officials said several trial runs conducted in recent weeks have yielded encouraging results.

Residents, unfamiliar with such technology, rushed to the spot after noticing the drone’s sudden descent. A large number of tribals gathered at the site, observing the device with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. Some initially mistook it for an unidentified flying object, adding to the panic in the area.

However, no injuries or casualties were reported, as the drone did not crash into residential areas. Officials said the precautionary measures taken by the operators helped avert any untoward incident.

Authorities are likely to conduct a detailed review of the incident and assess the technical issue. They are also expected to take steps to prevent similar occurrences as the pilot project progresses.
