Rajamahendravaram gears up for IDBL 2026 on Godavari
The city is set to emerge as a major hub for water sports as the Andhra Pradesh government prepares to host the International Dragon Boat League (IDBL) 2026 on the Godavari River from May 30.
The three-day international event will be organised by the State government in association with sports management firm Think Outside and the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA). Close to 1,000 athletes are expected to participate, competing in dragon boat racing, kayaking and canoeing events.
Officials said invitations have been extended to 25 countries, reflecting the growing global interest in water sports in India. So far, 12 countries have confirmed their participation. Competitions will be held across men’s, women’s and mixed categories, promising a high level of international competition on the Godavari.
Rajamahendravaram MLA Adireddy Srinivas said the event, being conducted under the Khelo India initiative, is aimed at showcasing both the sporting potential of the river and the city’s cultural heritage. He noted that the league carries the theme “IDBL-2026: Where Tradition Meets Sport,” highlighting the blend of heritage and modern sporting spirit.
IKCA Planning and Development Director R. Pradeep Naidu said the event is part of a broader effort to position Rajamahendravaram as a global destination for water sports. He added that the natural flow, width and scenic backdrop of the Godavari make it an ideal venue for international competitions.
The event is also expected to provide a boost to tourism and the local economy, with visitors, athletes and support teams likely to arrive in large numbers. The hospitality, transport and allied sectors are gearing up for the influx.
Significantly, the league will coincide with the promotional campaign for the Godavari Pushkarams scheduled for 2027, further enhancing the region’s visibility on both national and international platforms.
