EV buses planned to boost connectivity to Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport

In a bid to ease commuting challenges for air travellers, the Andhra Pradesh government is planning to introduce dedicated electric buses to improve last-mile connectivity to the upcoming Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport.

With the airport expected to be operational by the end of July, officials are working on deploying a fleet of electric buses to ferry passengers from various parts of North Andhra. The initiative is aimed at reducing travel time and providing a comfortable and economical mode of transport, especially for passengers travelling over 50 km from Visakhapatnam.

The move assumes significance in view of concerns over traffic congestion along the Visakhapatnam–Bhogapuram corridor. The proposed EV bus services are expected to ensure smoother connectivity and help passengers reach the airport in a timely manner.

The State government had earlier announced plans to procure 700 electric buses, of which 100 are proposed to be deployed in Visakhapatnam district. According to APSRTC officials, the buses will operate across Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts, strengthening connectivity to the new airport.

Airport authorities have sought around 60 electric buses, with about 20 to 30 likely to be allocated initially for airport services. The buses are expected to connect key points such as RTC Complex, the railway station and Beach Road, improving accessibility for passengers.

Plans are also under consideration to operate services via prominent hotels, including Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach and The Gateway Hotel Beach Road, to cater to tourists. In addition, some buses are likely to ply along the Anakapalli national highway and extend to parts of Srikakulam.

With the airport project nearing completion, officials said the proposed electric bus services would enhance last-mile connectivity while contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.
