Vizag woman survives triple cardiac arrest
A 62-year-old woman who suffered three episodes of cardiac arrest during the course of treatment was successfully revived each time by a multidisciplinary team of doctors at a private hospital in the city.
The patient, a diabetic, was admitted with complaints of breathlessness and inability to take food. Preliminary investigations revealed severe anaemia along with other abnormalities. In order to ascertain the underlying cause, the medical team decided to perform an endoscopic examination.
During the procedure, the patient developed ventricular tachycardia, resulting in a sudden cardiac arrest. She was immediately resuscitated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. Subsequently, after being shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU), she suffered a second cardiac arrest and was again revived.
Two days later, she experienced a third episode of cardiac arrest, necessitating another round of emergency shock treatment, following which her condition was stabilised.
Doctors observed that despite the repeated critical episodes, the patient remained conscious and responsive to instructions, which they described as clinically unusual.
Following sustained monitoring and gradual recovery, decannulation was performed, and the patient was discharged in a stable condition.
According to the treating doctors, the case highlights the importance of timely intervention, close monitoring and coordinated teamwork across specialities in managing critical medical emergencies.
