Visakhapatnam prison launches IT skill programme for inmates

The Andhra Pradesh Prisons Department has launched an IT-based skill development programme for inmates at the Central Prison here, aimed at improving employability and supporting rehabilitation.

The “Office Assistant” course was inaugurated on Thursday by District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore in collaboration with the Skill Development Institute (SDI), Visakhapatnam.

A total of 30 inmates have been enrolled in the first batch, with priority given to remand prisoners, particularly young inmates involved in NDPS cases.

The two-month training programme will cover computer applications, office administration, digital communication, office equipment handling, and basic employability skills. On completion, participants will receive certification from SDI Visakhapatnam.

Speaking on the occasion, Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore said such initiatives can play a transformative role in prison reform. “Skill development programmes inside prisons can help change lives and open new pathways for inmates to rebuild their future,” he said.

He added that inmates must make full use of the opportunity. “Use this training not just as a course, but as a chance to rebuild your confidence and future,” he told the participants.

Officials said the programme aims to enhance digital literacy, communication skills, workplace discipline, and confidence among inmates, thereby improving their employment prospects after release and aiding reintegration into society.

Later, the Collector visited the prison industries and skill development block, expressing satisfaction over the vocational and rehabilitative activities being undertaken. “It is encouraging to see structured efforts towards skill-building and reform inside prisons,” he observed.

Prison authorities said the initiative reflects a broader shift towards correctional administration focused on education, vocational training, and capacity building.

Central Prison Superintendent M. Mahesh Babu, Deputy Superintendent Ch. Surya Kumar and SDI Visakhapatnam officials were present.
